DYN Blog: Town of Cells
Tbilisi more and more looks like the “town of cells” and since April 9 people have been demanding resignation of Saakashvili. About a week opposition set up improvised cells in different part of Tbilisi and blocked the centre and entrances of the Parliament and the Presidential Palace. Mocked-up cells are reflecting autocratic regime of Saakashvili where people voluntarily can take place and protest existing regime as a self-imposed prisoner.
The President does not hurry to start a dialogue with opposition to resolve problems; opposite he tests their durability and gives controversial labels to protesters.
People got some different answer at very simple question: Who are demanding resignation of Saakashvili?
On April 23, Saakashvili explained to businesspersons that former corrupted officials were demanding his resignation.
“I know that very many people – those who were dismissed because of [involvement in] corruption… – are now angry and are quarrelling with us. There will be no compromise with these people. I do not regret even for a minute that such changes have taken place in police; I do not regret that I started imposing order in the customs service– we have confronted concrete groups, concrete clans and concrete influential persons and criminal structures to prevent them from stealing what belongs to Georgia ”. On April 11, Saakashvili gave an interview to Newsweek, where he stated that unemployed people plus relatives of jailed people were demanding his resignation.
“Mostly unemployed people. We fired about 250,000 people as a result of our reforms. A big percentage of these people have not managed to find themselves in the new economy. Fighting corruption and crime, we put thousands of people in jail. In Tbilisi alone we convicted 8,000 people; all of their relatives are outside today, asking me to resign”. Answer is very easy and people who demands resignation are citizens with expectation of changes, welfare and justice.
